Steelhead is considering candidates at the Director or Senior Director level professional who will be steering the Project Development department for Steelhead Americas, Vestas America's development arm. This individual will be responsible for supporting the growth, quality, and development of Steelhead's project portfolio and team members. This key function includes guiding the team in the growth of our early-stage pipeline and maturing projects through early to late-stage commercialization.

 

Responsibilities:

• Direct and oversee Steelhead's Development Team, which will include developing a team of direct reports (Regional Team Leads and supporting in management of their direct reports) and growing project pipeline to achieve our organizational goals on efficiently and effectively taking projects to graduation.

• Overall manage the development of a portfolio of projects: budgeting and finances, project timing and planning, risks assessment and management, legal balance and exposure of the projects.

• Manage, support and mentor the Regional Managers/Team Leads on execution strategy, project management, tactical decisions and identification, articulation, and mitigation of key project risks.

• Responsible for policy making on tactical strategy while escalating key risks and mitigation options to Steelhead Leadership team.

• Manage and provide guidance to the team on the management of both internal and external subject matter experts to complete all land acquisition, environmental, local/state/federal permitting, interconnection, real estate and design activities.

• Represent development team in strategic planning, operational priorities and support the cultural standard across the department.

• Monitor and submit / present status report(s) to maintain up-to-date summary of project activities including preparation of materials upcoming major decisions and mitigations.

• Liaise with Execution Teams (Real Estate, Greenfield and Public Engagement) regularly on strategy, best practices, improvements, and implantation of key drivers to finished project.

• Support and strategize real estate acquisition by leveraging commercially viable agreement structures.

• Provide guidance and mentorship to direct reports and others across the organization on both day-to-day project decisions and career development.

• Focus on process improvements and key drivers in creating and implementing Steelhead overall team strategy; the Director will be part of the Extended Leadership Team and will work closely with other leaders across the organization.

• Along with the team, represent Steelhead with customers, landowners, and local/state/regional stakeholders as needed and keep them informed throughout the development process; this includes attending community engagement events, conferences, policy/advocacy group meetings and other local events.

• Track, monitor, articulate and escalate industry trends to support strategic direction or initiatives that will impact Steelhead's portfolio growth.

• Work closely with Business Development team on partnership agreements or M&A activities to ensure efficient project management or handoff from that organization to Development.

• Oversee the preparation and presentation for project/market reviews both at both the Steelhead level and Global level management committees, including portfolio reviews and investment committee.

• Support energy offtake, financing, and project M&A discussions, including due diligence activities.

• Engage with developers on projects to ensure pipeline is progressing on schedule and within budget.

 

Qualifications:

• Typically requires a bachelor's degree in business, Engineering or related discipline and ideally a minimum of 8+ years related experience for Director; 10+ years for Senior Director; MBA or related Masters' degree preferred.

• 6+ years' experience overseeing large-scale utility energy development projects,4+ years specifically in wind for Director; 8+ years for Senior Director.

• Experience developing a small team is required.

• Willing to travel regularly within US and Canada (expected 20-30%)

 

Competencies:

• Has significant knowledge and capabilities in all the aspects of project development, including key project agreements/contracts, power sales, commercial markets, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), permitting, transmission, project financing, contracts, land acquisition, and financial analysis.

• Demonstrate a understanding of legal knowledge and background associated with successful contract management.

• Has managed land campaigns in various regions with internal and external land agents and is fluent in real estate contracts, title curative and ALTA survey.

• Has proven experience in and understanding of the North American power sector, including legal/regulatory aspects, market environment, competition, stakeholders, counterparties, and other areas that impact growth initiatives.

• Has a background in leading projects through financial close at Notice to Proceed (NTP) and Commercial Operation Date (COD).

• Senior level working knowledge of environmental sensitivities, development issues, permitting and interconnection processes.
