The Powertrain Module in Vestas Power Solutions is responsible for developing the complete Vestas powertrain for both onshore and offshore wind turbines. The module consists of 3 design submodules, Lubrication & MBA (Main Bearing Arrangement), Gearbox, and Generator. The Gearbox submodule is responsible and accountable for the Gearbox design solutions, provided by our Gearbox suppliers, and the integration of the Gearbox into the Powertrain. Real focus is on providing solutions which will reduce the cost of energy faster than the market. We are working on innovative solutions for providing customized offerings to our customers in order to participate in qualified and emerging markets even with complex local content demands.

The Gearbox submodule is a truly global team with main locations in Dortmund (Germany), Porto (Portugal) and Chennai (India).

The open position is for the Gearbox submodule location in Porto. The Gearbox is a major single component within the powertrain in terms of cost, weight and complexity. In order to strengthen our Gearbox Design Team, we are looking for a Gearbox Engineer, who will join in on advancing and maturing Gear Technology for our current and future Wind Turbine Products. You will be directly reporting to the Submodule Owner with the main responsibility for the Gearbox design in our platform projects.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain gearbox component specifications based on system and product level requirements.
  • Drive, control and review the gearbox concept and detailed design in close collaboration with the Functional Leads
  • Prepare verification plans, procedures and reports
  • Ensure gearbox integration into the turbine
  • Secure verification activities on test benches and in wind turbines
  • Provide technical information and documentation as input to project milestones and for certification
  • Support ramping up serial production
  • Facilitate continuous improvement based on field experience
  • Provide general business support to stakeholders such as Global Sourcing, Manufacturing and the Service organization

 

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent (e.g. Dipl.-Ing.) in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with specialization in Drive or Gear Technology
  • Preferably 2 - 5 years of experience in Gearbox Design and Development within (preferably) Wind Turbine, Aerospace, Automotive or Heavy Industries. Please don't hesitate to apply as we are open to consider experiences that you have gained in the course of your academic career.
  • Broad knowledge in calculation methods for gears, bearings, shafts, fasteners and structural components.
  • Knowledge in Finite Elements Analysis or general enthusiasm for simulations.
  • Good understanding of product development processes
  • Experience with requirements management tools, including traceability, risk and test management (particularly Visure)
  • Good understanding about ECM (Engineering Change Management) and it's impacts across the value chain
  • Deep insight into failure modes and mechanisms of gearboxes and related machine elements
  • Experience with CAD-/PLM/PDM systems such as Creo, PDM-Link and SAP.
  • Experience in gearbox verification and validation and corresponding risk assessment tools (DFMEA, PFMEA, process mapping, etc)
  • Good English skills (verbal and written) required
