As a Converter Electrical Engineer in the "Converter Design and Integration" sub-module, you will be part of a team of highly skilled R&D engineers located in Denmark, Portugal, and Chennai.

In our department, we are accountable for the design of the electrical converter for all onshore and offshore Vestas' turbines, as well as the converter integration in Nacelle and its electrical interface design.

The Converter & Electrical (C&E) Module is part of Vestas’ R&D organization, Power Solutions. The Converter Design and Integration team within C&E Module is an essential contributor to making the current and future wind turbines more efficient and cost-effective. This is done by being responsible for the development and maintenance of the components according to the full value chain requirements. All Vestas products are based on internally developed converters since electrical power conversion is at the core of how a wind turbine performs, operates, and interacts with the electrical grid.

 

Responsibilities

You will be a part of the Converter Design and Integration team. Converter Design and Integration team consist of 20 highly skilled designers and specialists located in Aarhus, Porto, and Chennai. You will report to the Converter Design and Integration Manager within Converter and Electrical Module in Vestas. Your main responsibilities and tasks will be electro-mechanical design and analysis for key components of wind converters.

Your key responsibilities and tasks will be to:

  • Electro-mechanical and thermal design (analysis, calculation, and simulation) of main circuit & secondary automation of wind turbine converters
  • Systems Engineering process adherence through concept-requirements-design-verification
  • Verification through testing and analysis and creating documentation
  • Ensure that the design solutions meet the product requirements such as NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness), durability, thermal, environmental, and performance
  • Support bill of material through the Engineering Change Notification process
  • Support communication with suppliers and manufacturing, making sure to meet design targets and cost-down activities

Specific knowledge of:

  • Industrial low-voltage (medium-voltage) distribution systems 
  • Busbar sizing (design copper or aluminum busbars, carrying high currents) including electrical and thermal design and simulations
  • Main circuit components: current interruption, relays, busbars, insulators, sensors
  • Earthing schemes; protection and selectivity; insulation coordination; fault handling
  • International design standards for electrical systems
  • Calculation methods e.g., load flow and short circuit calculation; power loss calculations
  • DFMEA as a working method and know the importance of DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFA (Design for Assembly)

 

Qualifications

  • A bachelor/master’s in a relevant area, i.e., Electrical, Electronics, or Mechatronics Engineering
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in Electro-mechanical design 
  • Working understanding of electrical power converter design, test, and verification
  • Good computer-aided design skills such as simulation tools like MatLab, ANSYS etc.
  • Experienced in project execution in a matrix organization
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience working in international teams and with suppliers
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills
