Power Solutions & Vestas Quality > Product Solutions & Integration > LaC Control Technologies

Load and Control is part of Vestas Power Solutions being responsible for delivering design loads, advanced control solutions, as well as commercial deliverables like power curves and noise levels to larger parts of the organization. The responsibility spans from early engagement with product management on providing feasibility studies related to future products over controller tuning and load calculation iterations during product development to controller performance and load validation on product prototypes.

The Loads and Control Technologies department is geographically divided between offices in Aarhus, Denmark and Porto, Portugal. It provides the rest of the Loads and Controls Module with innovative technologies within the areas of design basis improvements using probabilistic design methodologies, wind turbine modeling capabilities as well as wind turbine and plant level control solutions. This with the overarching aim of lowering the levelized cost of energy produced by our products. Daily work in the department is focused on delivering solutions in ongoing technology projects that have a clear business impact on current and future product developments, as well as technology feasibility studies supporting the continuous development of our technology roadmap. To deliver our work efficiently, the department is divided into development value streams each supporting specific internal customers representing the different phases of the overall operational value stream of Vestas. The value streams have full accountability for the entire life cycle of developed technologies, this ranging from early feasibility studies and technology maturation through the technology development process to supporting internal customers in ensuring that technologies are efficiently integrated into Vestas's products.

For the Turbine Development value stream, we are currently looking for control engineers at graduate to join engineer career levels to effectively develop wind turbine control solutions supporting value stream KPIs, strategic focus areas and technical solutions related to the product roadmap. Technologies developed by the value stream are within the area of wind turbine control and aimed at improving the efficiency of wind turbine products including cost-outs, AEP improvements, grid compatibility and noise reductions. Additionally, the delivered solutions need to support the modularization journey that Vestas is currently on by being easy customizable to support a wide range of customer use cases and product configurations.

The Turbine Design value stream has an important role in promoting the innovation of Vestas products and as a Control Engineer you get the unique opportunity to support the value creation within the business area of the value stream. To support you, you will have a team of highly skilled and experienced Control Engineers.

In your daily work you will:

  • Participate in ideation and feasibility studies related to new control technology candidates
  • Develop and implement control algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink
  • Provide control technology verification on all levels including simulations, software functionality tests and prototype testing in the field
  • Conduct risk management activities and failure mode and effect analysis
  • Provide tools and documentation to support the integration of control technologies into Vestas's products.

You should have:

  • A Ph.D. or M.Sc. within control engineering or related field
  • Extensive coding experience - especially within the MATLAB/Simulink environment
  • A few years of control engineering work experience

It´s nice if you also have:

  • 5+ years of control engineering work experience
  • Experience in driving control technology development projects from ideation to product integration
  • Wind industry experience, including experience or knowledge of aero elastic tools such as Flex5, Bladed or HAWC2
  • Experience in version control systems, e.g. GIT and agile planning tools, e.g. Jira

It is expected that you:

  • Can (or are willing to learn how to) develop engineering solutions within the control area from start to end
  • Are good in managing multiple stakeholders at various levels of the organization
  • Are pragmatic and quality-conscious
  • Are result-oriented with a significant focus on the task
  • Have a creative approach to new tasks
  • Succeed as part of a team as well as with independent tasks
  • Collaborate and share knowledge with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Have good English communication skills - both verbally and in writing
