The Components Design team supports new product development, technology projects, continuous improvement, and cost-out initiatives for the Blade module. The CD team is accountable for the blade design for manufacturing and plays a key role in ensuring the right TRL, MRL, and SRL maturity. It is also responsible for translating product structural definition into a manufacturable product, accounting for process requirements and material specifications during the design and development of wind turbine blades. The team is made up of skilled employees located in Chennai (India), Lem (Denmark), Isle of Wight (UK) and Porto (Portugal). This is an exciting position that involves travel to Vestas blade manufacturing facilities and to external suppliers worldwide, working on existing products and participating in development projects.
Responsibilities
As a Composite Design Engineer, you will design optimized composite components that can be robustly manufactured. Mainly working in a multi-disciplined and cross-functional team you will:
- Design for manufacture of large-scale composite components using CATIA composite V5 (generative shape design - GSD, composites design - CPD, creating IMLs, ply splicing, producibility, flat patterns, laser projection)
- Develop and maintain FMEAs to ensure robust and efficient design
- Utilize Six Sigma methodology to reduce process variation and enhance process controls
- Drive the integration of elements into new blade designs
- Increase the design/process maturity of new blade elements across the full value chain
- Creation of Manufacturing Bill of Materials (BOM), Ply-books and drawings
- Support early prototype builds and carry out design/process verification activities to ensure the intent is met
- Define specifications across design, process, and tooling functions
- Creating engineering requests and changes via the Engineering Change Management system - ECM (Windchill)
- Compile requirements and stakeholder feedback to develop, down select and de-risk component design
- Provide supplier support, both internal and external
- Manage project execution roadmaps within team scope and effectively communicate with both internal and external stakeholders
Qualifications
- Hold a bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent, coupled with practical knowledge of composite manufacturing e.g., infusion technology, component assembly
- Experience within blade design, design for manufacturing, and have solid practice experience with CATIA composite V5
- Experience with running optimization and process development projects in manufacturing environments
- Experience with statistical data & tolerance analysis
- Experience in coordinating FMEAs
- Experience with project leadership
- Effective communication skills in English (written and spoken)

Additional information
This is a hybrid position based in Porto, Portugal and requires up to 30 days of travel per year.
