BOP Specialist

Sales/SBU AME/North America Services

The Service business unit is the owner for the after turbine sales business. Service operates, maintains, and executes all service contracts, T&M work, modified scope contracts, and CIM for various customer assets across North America. Service interfaces directly with operational counterparts within customer organizations maximizing turbine operation and performance. Oversees the Balance of Plant (BOP) activities on a site facility, substations, collection/interconnect systems, roads and MET equipment including, repairs, inspections, outages and maintenance. Oversees the site electrical, high-voltage (HV), and substation support and response activities.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for the assisting the Region in Site Balance of Plant Operations under the guidance of the BOP Lead Professional. Successfully meets / exceeds key objectives and performance in the areas of safety results and behavior, execution excellence, team alignment / engagement / motivation, customer loyalty and financial performance.  

  • Ensures that site level safety practices and protocol are in alignment with organizational standards and ensures compliance and optimal safety results. Helps champion the journey to an incident, injury and illness free environment. Maintains close partnership with the BOP Technical Support and to Health, Safety and Environment department. 

  • Provides support to the Site Manager, SOM and BOP Team with promoting a highly aligned, engaged and motivated organization that produces high-level results against Key Performance Indicators and operational objectives. 

  • Helps the Region to achieve and sustain a culture of Execution Excellence (safety focus, structure, work discipline) and continuous improvement with the site organization to advance capability and performance in all operational areas. 

  • Utilizes Best Known Methods optimizing operational performance at site. Supports a learning organization within the operation using Best Practices to maximize BOP equipment maintenance and performance. 

  • Support change management activity and initiatives within their team. 

  • Establishes and maintains highly effective relationships with the customer and internal partners. Pursues “ambassador” status with their customer and a site that is focused on customer loyalty excellence. 

  • Interacts with vendors for sites. 

  • Supports Site Manager, SOM and BOP Team with site activities to meet site, regional and departmental objectives. 

  • Assists Site Managers with special projects such as annual budgets, performance appraisals, etc. 

  • Travels approximately 40% within region as needed to support business needs, potentially assisting other regions with maintenance and/or troubleshooting activity. 

  • Will perform BOP activities on Substations including, minor repairs, inspections, outages, maintenance, weed abatement and snow removal 

  • Will perform activities on O&M building, collection and/or interconnect systems including minor repairs, inspections, outages, maintenance, snow removal and weed abatement 

  • Will assist the regional BOP activities at all the site facilities, including roads, gates cattle guards and MET equipment including, repairs, inspections, maintenance, weed abatement and snow removal 

  • Oversees administering of switching orders, testing, repairs, switching, grounding, and construction activities as required within the region. 

  • Performs activities related to infrared inspections, battery maintenance, dielectric oil sampling and SF6  

  • Will coordinate with BOP Team Lead Professional in substation maintenance and outage planning 

  • Performs substation and transmission inspections in accordance with NERC compliance requirements 

  • Works closely with Site Operations Managers and Site Owners to ensure reliability of the balance of plant at all regional facilities 

  • Ensures adherence to all pertinent HV OSHA safety requirements and follow company policies and procedures 

  • Provides detailed written reports, including root cause analyses, to management 

  • Adheres to specifications and Procedures related to switching, safety and testing equipment. 

  • Performs periodic testing of the equipment used for operations on the site 

  • Aids in implementation of maintenance programs and schedules for interconnect and collection systems. 

  • Will coordinate with BOP Lead of all switching orders and work clearances related to high voltage activities.  

  • Ensures all BOP activities are done in a safe and professional manner 

 

Qualifications 

  • Associates degree in power generation or equivalent. 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with Substation and Collection System 

  • 5 years of experience as project manager, project lead, or other management experience, preferably in a related service, industrial or manufacturing setting. Demonstrated ability to lead day to day operations with an hourly workforce. 

  • 5 or more years direct supervisory experience. 

  • Proven high standards and values. 

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability in coaching, mentoring, motivating and developing employees to achieve a highly aligned, motivated and engaged team. Effective change and conflict management. Proven decision-making ability with balanced risk taking. 

  • Knowledge and experience with effective safety programs, practices and procedures. 

  • Highly self-driven, accountability and ownership. Functions effectively under pressure in environments of rapid change and conflicting demands. Enjoys multi-tasking. 

  • Continuous improvement and quality methodology skills. Effective issue resolution and structured problem solving. 

  • Technical background, in Electrical Systems and/or Electrical Generation Substations for both Control and High Voltage AC/DC Circuitry preferred; knowledge of technical drawings and schematics. Ability to understand and utilize technical language. 

  • Understanding of NERC Reliability Standards – Specifically related to PRC-005 – Transmission and Generation Protection System Maintenance and Testing 

  • Understanding and exposure to the following systems: 

  • Protective relays which respond to electrical quantities 

  • Communication systems necessary for correct operation of protective functions 

  • Voltage and current sensing devices providing inputs to protective relays 

  • Station DC supply associated with protective functions (including Station batteries, battery chargers, and non-battery based DC supply) 

  • DC control circuitry associated with protective functions through the trip coil(s) of the circuit breakers or other interrupting devices. 

  • Experience scheduling, administering and managing projects to achieve successful outcome. 

  • Excellent English communications skills (verbal, active listening, written, meeting management, presentation). 

  • Valid driver’s license, passport and ability to travel as needed to meet business objectives. 

  • Strong PC computer skills (MS Office) required, SAP knowledge highly preferred. MS Office – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. 

  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, climb stairs, hearing ability to use close range radios, visual acuity including depth perception, field of vision and the ability to distinguish between colors, ability to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl as needed, as well as hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.  

  • Ability to operate insulated man basket or man lift  

  • Ability to climb ladders to heights of 60 to 100 meters and supervise work in confined space environments. 

  • Certifications required before hire are AED/CPR/First-Aid (must be instructor led), OSHA 10 (General Industry) and NFPA 70E (User’s guide to Electrical PPE).
