Mechanical Engineering Manager
Manage the Mechanical Engineering department for all wind turbine equipment in Vestas Americas. Supervise the prioritization, development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Mechanical Engineering function to optimize turbine component reliability and cost. Supervise and coordinate a highly skilled and efficient team of Engineers focused on ensuring the reliability of wind turbine components. Work with internal, external, local, and global stakeholders to take appropriate action to improve overall reliability and customer satisfaction. Support business case creation, validation, and escalation of solution development and upgrades associated with wind turbine components. Write, review, or present technical reports, presentations, and customer communications to internal, external, local, and global stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Manage highly skilled group of engineers responding to technical inquiries from construction, service, technical sales, and external customers, and ensure delivery of responses on time and with the required level of quality.
- Understand product technology around drivetrain, bearings, hydraulics, cooling systems and special tools within a limited area of subject matter expertise, provide technical guidance to other engineers within the region
- Work within multi-discipline teams to resolve complex mechanical systems anomalies, from root cause analysis through development of cost effective, safe technical solutions. Supervise the team and project scope including preparation of formal RCA reports and improvement documentation.
- Supervise proactive component improvement projects to optimize safety, performance, and operational cost of mechanical systems and components for wind turbine generators
- Facilitate globalization of locally developed solutions and improvements
- Work diligently to eliminate risks to Quality, Health and Safety, and Environment
- Develop and review region-specific and global technical documentation, specifications, and drawings in support of mechanical systems
- Develop or assist in design of special tools, rigging and lifting devices for wind turbine up tower work; ensure compliance with ASME, AISC, AWS and other applicable codes
- Provide support for suppliers/vendors manufacturing special tools, rigging, and lifting devices required for WTG operation and repair
- Train and mentor regional colleagues within limited area(s) of subject matter knowledge
- Understand customer and operational needs and use knowledge to develop and implement technical solutions
- May participate in industry groups supporting wind technology
- Provide approval/input of safety alerts, safety procedures and communications to site related activities for Construction and Service
- Provide input on prioritizing Operations Engineering projects based on site needs to enhance turbine improvements in the fleet
- Coordinate strategic short- and long-term goals with R&D, Service, and Operations
- Provide feedback to Senior Management on KPI’s and Projects
- Make triage decisions as to resource allocation throughout organization to produce the best results in line with company goals and needs
- Ensure financial targets and project obligations are met and regularly exceeded
- Travel as needed throughout the Americas region and beyond (up to 20%).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on heavy industrial machinery, including interdisciplinary technical experience
- The position also requires experience with all of the following:
- 5 years of technical leadership experience.
- 5 years of mechanical engineering experience.
- Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering
- Experienced in mechanical engineering fundamentals: stress analysis, machine design, power transmission, hydraulics and cooling systems
- Demonstrated interacting with Sr. Management for communicating technical issues.
- Proficient understanding of standard processes of customer service with experience implementing internal processes to improve efficiency.
- Ability to build solid internal and external customer relationships and effectively negotiate with customers to resolve disputes and promote good customer relations.
- Highly skilled in analytical, organization, planning, and leadership tasks
- Experience in systematized problem-solving methodology (8D, DMAIC, etc.)
- Good business understanding from exposure to customers in either sales or service
- Ability to work internationally with large demanding customers to support the business
- Demonstrated flexibility working in a rapidly evolving and changing organization
- Proficient computer skills, specifically MS office products. Some proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD – Autocad and Creo Parametric
- Travel required as an essential element of job: up to 20%, including international travel

- Ability to effectively participate in and manage a cross-functional team
- Effective written and oral communication skills; able to express oneself clearly and in technical and non-technical terms
- Solve problems analytically; search out relevant information and gauge its importance when making decisions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite computer skills (Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and SAP)
- Ability to work flexible hours and with variety of cultures (coordinating with various time zones)
- Ability to work with people, to lead by example and by motivating and empowering
- Ability to accept new ideas and changing initiatives
