Responsibilities:

  • The Senior Specialist in Mechanical Engineering is recognized worldwide as a key authority on product technology related to drivetrains, bearings, hydraulics, cooling systems, and special tools
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineers within the department and globally
  • Respond to technical inquiries from construction, service, technical sales, and external customers, delivering responses on time and with the required level of quality
  • Direct multi-discipline and global teams to resolve complex mechanical systems anomalies, from root cause analysis through development of cost effective, safe technical solutions; oversee preparation of formal RCA reports and improvement documentation
  • Directs proactive component improvement projects to optimize safety, performance, and operational cost of mechanical systems and/or components for wind turbine generators
  • Promote the worldwide adoption of solutions and improvements developed locally
  • As an individual contributor, complete complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures; this requires the use of advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices in the field of mechanical engineering and related disciplines
  • Perform technical reviews of colleague's work, including calculations, technical documentation, drawings, test plans, and formal communication
  • Take steps ahead of time to reduce risks to quality, health and safety, and the environment
  • Oversee development and maintenance of region-specific and global technical documentation, specifications, and drawings in support of mechanical systems
  • Provide technical guidance in construction-related issues regarding turbine installation
  • Oversee design of special tools, rigging and lifting devices for wind turbine up tower work; ensure compliance with ASME, AISC, AWS and other applicable codes
  • Coach, support, and develop team members to build their capabilities and improve performance and retention within the Mechanical Engineering group
  • Understand customer and operational needs and use knowledge to develop and create technical solutions
  • With Engineering Manager, select and retain qualified team members who contribute well to overall team performance
  • With Engineering Manager, develop and maintain the Engineering Department's operating processes and procedures; this includes responsibility for development of technical department strategies
  • Present technology at conferences and is widely regarded as a regional authority on supporting Vestas commercial operations
  • Participate in industry groups that support wind technology; at times, it may be necessary to guide or shape the direction of key industry groups

Qualifications

  • Education, Training, and Skills Required: Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on heavy industrial machinery, including interdisciplinary technical experience
  • Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer, with at least 5 year experience in Wind Turbine Generators
  • Solid knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals: stress analysis, machine design, power transmission, hydraulics and cooling systems
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational abilities to coordinate multiple projects and priorities
  • Experience in systematized problem-solving methodology (8D, DMAIC, etc.)
  • Good business understanding from exposure to customers in either sales or service
  • Ability to work internationally with large demanding customers to support the business
  • Demonstrated flexibility working in a changing organization
  • Proficient computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office applications. Some proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD - Autocad and Creo Parametric
  • Travel required as an essential element of job: 15%, including international travel
