General Purpose:

The HSE Manager is part of a regional HSE team focused on providing safety, and environmental leadership to the Construction Business Unit responsible for the safe construction and operation of wind turbines across the Americas region (US and Canada).  This role provides leadership, strategic direction, and technical support around the implementation of HSE programs and processes for the Vestas Construction Business, while ensuring the safety of our employees/contractors, minimizing our environmental footprint, and ensuring the quality of our products and services.



  • Advocate and influence a no harm safety culture.
  • Develop and carry out HSE goals within region of responsibility.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with Construction and Transportation Business Managers by site visits, conducting regular update meetings, participating in safety walks, and interacting with all personnel at the wind farms and transportation locations.
  • Establish Injury and Illness prevention methods specifically in soft tissue injuries, subcontractor management, and human performance principles.
  • Attract talent & develop team of HSE specialists and professionals
  • Fiscal responsibility with inter-departmental budgets
  • Develop and facilitate forums for knowledge and sharing of best practices along with general integration of HSE programs across the area including integration of Corporate, Group, and Regional QSE initiatives
  • Monitor the setup of new Construction and Transportation activities, ensuring Vestas Processes related to HSE are being followed.
  • Facilitate compliance with ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 management systems within region.
  • Support Construction and Transport Business Management in the execution of HSE items at all construction and transport facilities in region.
  • Direct and monitor the HSE transition activities from construction to service on new or expanding Vestas locations.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with customers and governmental authorities on matters of mutual concern.
  • Build organization capability by providing HSE training and development of HSE Professional-Contractors to ensure each site within Construction and Transportation business areas has the appropriate technical and functional competencies.
  • Act as resource manager for HSE Professional-Contractor suppliers, and actively source team members from sourced contractors.   To include interviewing, supplying and evaluating contractors’ performance.
  • Support investigation process of incidents and provide guidance on incident investigation methods.. Monitor incidents to determine root cause trends to guide the business partners in action planning based upon trends. 
  • Oversee management of work-related injuries and return to work activities within construction and transportation Vestas employees, and through subcontractor management of contractors.
  • Maintain current knowledge of HSE industry best practices and technological developments and equipment to remain up-to-date on related systems, devices and techniques designed to eliminate or minimize associated risks.
  • Provide support and oversight to safety training programs. Training may include strategies and goals to develop/improve safety culture, HSE technical programs/policies, injury trend data, HSE/regulatory information pertinent to the jurisdiction, workers' compensation/injury case management, and basic knowledge related to safe operation of Vestas Wind Turbines, etc.
  • Ability to frequently travel within regional footprint (US and Canada), 40-60% travel.


Essential Functions:

  • Ability to effectively supervise and coordinate a team of employees and HSE contractors.
  • Ability to effectively direct a cross functional team that may include internal, external, domestic and international stakeholders
  • Effective written and oral communication skills; ability to express oneself clearly and in technical and non-technical terms in English to senior management
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to work flexible hours, with limited supervision in a remote environment with limited supervision


Education, Training, and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's or Associates degree with a minimum of five to eight years’ work experience in General Industry, Industrial, or Construction environmental, health, and safety preferred.
  • Certification (CSP/ASP/CRSP/GSP) preferred.
  • Experience in applying international HSE standards (ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001) across business units and geographies.
  • Experience with cranes, lifting and rigging, safety management systems, control of hazardous energy, confined space requirements, work at heights and soft tissue injury prevention.
  • Should be capable of working with little supervision, and in a remote setting. 
  • Ability to mentor/coach as technical expert and influence line managers to true root causes of incidents, ensuring transparency during investigations, and trending review.
  • Simplicity - will be required to interpret regulations and company policy and deliver meaningful reasoning and education in support of regulations, along with the creation of regional specific campaigns that encourage ownership of Vestas HSE by everyone.
  • Collaboration - Ability to work with multiple levels of the organization including front line workforce, managers, directors, and support departments towards creating a No Harm Safety Culture.

  • Ability to demonstrate managerial courage (e.g., coordinating varied interests representing potential conflicts in a remote setting).
  • Computer skills necessary include Microsoft Office Suite and basic skills in SAP.
  • Ability to audit, supervise global and local standards, basic knowledge of manufacturing and system function, product knowledge, risk assessment processes, risk management, root cause analysis, continuous improvement, customer satisfaction, be diplomatic, take initiative, demonstrate and foster leadership.
