Blades Engineer

Vestas is looking for engineers (f/m/d) with mechanical or material engineering background to join our thriving community in a very exciting, cross-functional role.

Vestas North and Central Europe (NCE) is responsible for selling, installing and servicing windfarms in North and central Europe and also at new markets like South Africa and Russia. 
Every year Blades team is analysing the conditions of over 20.000 Blades only in Northern and Central Europe. Blade Engineering & Support team is mainly responsible of making the assessments. These assessments are based on the yearly inspections that Vestas performs in servicing the blades. 
Your main objective will be to support the mechanical aspects of Vestas wind turbine sales, installation, and maintenance efforts.  You will need to perform complex mechanical engineering assignments with considerable latitude for action and decision making. This role is a blade support engineer (f/m/d) and will be primarily focused on blade related issues and projects.  Wind turbine blades include glass and carbon fibre construction with integrated lightning receptors.

 

Your primary area of responsibility will be to:

 

Support sales

 

  • Understand product technology around blade construction and repair and communication with customer's engineers and consultants.  
  • Respond to technology due diligence requests by customers, consultants, financers, etc.
  • Develop and maintain region-specific technical documentation in support of the above functions
  • Provide internal failure analysis in support of commercial considerations.  Provide failure forecasts for drivetrain components (affecting service contract costing)
  • Present technology at conferences and generally be a regional technology expert supporting Vestas in front of potential customers

 

Support construction 

 

  • Review construction Requests for Information for contractor installation modification requests.
  • Provide on-site and in-office support for blade damage evaluation and repair methods.  
  • Direct communication with customers including assessment of damage from construction/transportation.

 

Support service

 

  • Completes corrective action projects to analyse and resolve failures of blades in Service 
  • Respond to technical inquiries from service personnel, project managers, and outside customers. 
  • Conducts studies to assess failure modes and effects (FMEA) and develop time to failure models. 
  • Coordinates/communicates with Vestas Research & Development as required for ongoing product development and reliability projects. 
  • Manage testing and inspection work to assist R&D with ongoing improvement testing.
  • Manage and support complex Component Improvement Management projects with cross-functional international teams.
  • Support Operations with tooling, up-tower repair, and maintenance/inspection expertise.

 

Qualifications

 

Required

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Material or Mechanical Engineering (other degrees considered with experience)
  • Experience with glass and/or carbon fibre design and construction
  • Ability to work under pressure and multi-task in a fast paced/deadline oriented environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in German and English
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrated flexibility working in a dynamic and changing organization. 
  • Strong computer skills, specifically in MS Office products and AutoCAD/ProE
  • Must be a highly motivated self-starter and be able to work with little supervision. 

 

Preferred

 

  • Experience with glass/carbon structural repair (especially on wind turbine blades)
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering 
  • Specific experience in the implementation, operation, system standards and service of wind turbines.
  • Experience in project management and systematized problem-solving methodology (8D, DMAIC, etc.)
  • Experience or strong knowledge in 2-D and 3-D mechanical modelling (FEA a plus)
  • Several years of experience in engineering with background in solving problems
