Vestas Factory

Engineer the future of wind—before it’s built.

Use advanced digital prototyping and DfX simulations at Vestas to influence global turbine design, manufacturing, and service from day one.

Vestas Technology & Operations > Research & Development (R&D) > DfX - Digital Prototyping

Vestas Technology & Operations (VTO) is the integrated CTO and COO organization within Vestas, encompassing the full industrial value chain — from Research & Development, Procurement and Manufacturing to Supply Chain and Quality. VTO’s mission is to transform the way Vestas engineers, sources, contracts, manufactures and delivers its products to consistently meet the highest standards for quality, cost efficiency and time-to-market.

The DfX Digital Prototyping Department is a specialized, cross‑functional engineering team that ensures wind turbine designs are fully validated before they progress to physical prototyping or production. The team focuses on confirming that every design is manufacturable, assemble‑able, transportable, installable, and serviceable in real‑world conditions.

Acting as a critical bridge between product development and the global value chain, the department works closely with R&D, manufacturing, installation, and service organizations. Its mission is to ensure that engineering releases are not only technically sound, but also practical, efficient, safe, and executable at scale across factories and project sites worldwide.

The department plays a strategic role in driving Design‑for‑X (DfX) maturity by leveraging digital prototyping, virtual build simulations, and advanced manufacturing simulation tools. Through early risk identification and validation, the team helps optimize product architecture, reduce downstream issues, and support operational excellence throughout the turbine lifecycle—from concept development to installation and service operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Design‑for‑X (DfX) simulations and digital prototyping to validate wind turbine designs for manufacturing, assembly, transport, installation, and service
  • Use virtual build and process simulation tools to identify risks early and support robust design decisions across the product lifecycle
  • Partner closely with R&D, Manufacturing, Installation, and Service teams to ensure designs are practical, safe, and executable in real‑world environments
  • Analyze 3D CAD data, BOMs, and process flows to evaluate assembly sequences, tooling access, human interaction, and ergonomics
  • Communicate simulation insights clearly and effectively to a wide range of technical and non‑technical stakeholders across global locations
  • Act as a subject‑matter expert and ambassador for digital prototyping, promoting simulations as a key enabler of operational excellence
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of DfX methods, tools, and best practices in an agile, collaborative team environment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Production, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, preferably within wind energy or complex industrial products
  • Strong understanding of wind turbine systems, modular architecture, and product lifecycle from concept to field deployment
  • Hands‑on experience with Design‑for‑X (DfX), digital prototyping, virtual build, or manufacturing simulations
  • Proven ability to work closely with R&D, Manufacturing, Installation, and Service teams in global engineering environments
  • Familiarity with digital engineering and simulation tools used for manufacturing or process validation
  • Field exposure to factories, installation sites, or service operations; willingness to travel as needed

Competencies

  • Strong expertise in wind turbine systems, mechanical engineering principles, and Design‑for‑X (DfX) methodologies applied to complex products
  • Proficiency in simulation‑driven engineering, including virtual build, digital prototyping, digital twin concepts, and related digital verification techniques
  • Experience supporting design reviews, engineering change (ECN) evaluations, and decision‑making across the full product lifecycle
  • Solid understanding of end‑to‑end value chain activities, including manufacturing, assembly, installation, and service operations
  • Strong cross‑functional communication skills, with the ability to provide technical guidance and influence stakeholders across engineering and operations
  • Proven capability in technical feasibility assessments, early risk identification, and structured root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights
